Team cut: Cross-functional or skill-oriented?

Complicated or complex products need good cross-functional coordination to make the product as robust as possible. Cross-functional teams that have all the skills on board to deliver their contribution “ready to use” with as few interfaces as possible are the best help here.

But complex projects also need the speed and throughput in the implementation of large tasks that often only a group of experts can provide. Therefore, it is also necessary to well integrate the groups of experts that simply “do away” with large mountains of work. For example, software teams producing millions of lines of code, or electronics engineers designing complex circuit boards.

It’s all in the mix!

The team structure is often oriented towards the architecture levels.

  • At the functional architecture level, there are often cross-functional teams that are able to integrate and test the product at the system level.
  • At the technical architecture level, there are often skill-oriented teams that provide a specific hardware or software component.

Both types of teams have POTs.

The POT approaches the respective team members to formulate robust sprint and milestone goals.
